A Historic Ascent: Monaco United WFC Secures District Title in Debut Season

In a sporting landscape where longevity is often the prerequisite for success, Monaco United WFC has upended the status quo. On Sunday, in the penultimate match of the 2025-2026 season, the club secured the District 06 championship with a  14-0 victory over AS Fontonne Antibes. The result provides the fledgling club with its first piece of silverware and, more pivotally, a mathematical guarantee of the top spot and a berth in the regional promotion play-offs.

The achievement is a rare feat in European football: a club winning a league title in its inaugural year of existence. Founded only last June, Monaco United has operated with a structured, professionalized ambition that belies its "District" status. Under the dual leadership of President and Head Coach Marco Simone, the team has maintained an unbeaten run characterized by a rigorous four-session-per-week training schedule.

"This season, built entirely from scratch, was prepared in the best possible way," Mr. Simone said following the match. "This historic title marks a significant moment shared by everyone involved in the adventure."

The statistics of the campaign reflect a widening gulf between Monaco United and its divisional peers. The 14-0 win was the exclamation point on a four-game winning streak in which the side dictated tempo and high-press efficiency. For Houleyemata Deme, the club’s captain, the title represents the validation of a nascent project. "Being captain comes with real responsibility," Ms. Deme noted. "Winning it at home, in front of our supporters, makes this moment even more special."

While the league title is secure, the club’s primary objective - climbing the French football pyramid - remains a work in progress. The championship grants them entry into the promotion play-offs scheduled for late May, where they will face other district winners for a spot in the Régional division.

However, the club's immediate focus shifts from league celebrations to a pursuit of history in the Coupe Méditerranée. On April 5, Monaco United will host Hyères in a semi-final at Stade Didier Deschamps. Hyères, a side competing in the division above Monaco, enters as the favorite. Yet, Monaco United’s prior upset of Division 3 side Rousset suggests the gap in tiers may be narrower than the books imply.

No district-level club has ever reached the final of the Coupe Méditerranée. Should Monaco United prevail on Sunday, they will not only continue their unbeaten momentum but also establish a new precedent for women’s football in the Principality.
