As part of its summer programming highlighting vehicles featured in the exhibition "Monaco & l'Automobile, de 1893 à nos jours," the Grimaldi Forum has brought renewed attention to a defining moment in motorsport history: the unexpected victory of the Morris Mini Cooper S at the 1964 Monte-Carlo Rally.
Against all conventional expectations, the small British vehicle triumphed over far more powerful contenders on the treacherous mountain roads of the Principality. The 1963 model’s compact proportions, agility, and maneuverability through tight corners allowed it to outperform larger rivals, securing an iconic place in racing lore.
The historic victory is commemorated through key archival materials and preserved models, including the Morris Mini Cooper S driven by Paddy Hopkirk and Henry Liddon at the Col de Turini during the 1964 event, documented in the Archives of the Automobile Club de Monaco. Another 1963 edition is maintained by the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Museum.
The broader exhibition runs through September 6, 2026, at the Grimaldi Forum Monaco (with an exceptional closure on Saturday, August 22). Doors are open daily from 10:00 to 20:00, with late-night hours on Thursdays until 22:00.
