A Lyrical Homage to Marcel Pagnol’s Provence at Fort Antoine

The literary and emotional landscape of Marcel Pagnol will be reexamined under the stars next month at the Fort Antoine Theatre. Scheduled for Tuesday, July 14, 2026, Marcel Pagnol: Variations d’Amour offers an intimate portrait of the legendary French dramatist and filmmaker, whose ability to capture the distinct voices and cultural textures of his native Provence earned him global renown.

Conceived and directed by the author’s grandson, Nicolas Pagnol, the 1-hour-and-15-minute production is structured as a poetic and musical reading. It seeks to explore the deeper, more fervent dimensions of a writer who approached the theme of love with the authenticity of personal experience. The performance is designed for a general audience.

The production relies on the artistic synergy of two primary performers. Vincent Fernandel delivers the spoken-word elements, lending his voice to a narrative compiled from Pagnol’s most celebrated works as well as his private correspondences. Mirroring the cadence of the text is an original musical framework composed and performed live by pianist Franck Ciup.

Produced by Le Fonds de Dotation Marcel Pagnol and distributed by the Compagnie Dans La Cour des Grands, the staging leverages the open-air setting of Fort Antoine to create a focused, contemplative environment. The performance is scheduled to begin at 21:30, integrating the natural atmospheric shift of a Mediterranean summer evening into the presentation of Pagnol's sun-drenched prose.
