AlUla: A Hidden Gem from Saudi Arabia Showcased on Larvotto Beach

This summer, the Promenade du Larvotto in Monaco has been transformed into an extraordinary open-air art gallery, showcasing a stunning photo exhibition titled "AlUla: A Weave of Creativity." Running until September 3, this exhibit offers visitors a glimpse into AlUla, a "cultural oasis" located in north-west Saudi Arabia, a region that blends ancient history, striking landscapes, and modern artistry.

Exploring AlUla’s Rich Heritage and Landscape

AlUla is home to some of the most significant historical sites in Saudi Arabia, including Hegra, the first Saudi site to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Hegra, also known as Mada'in Salih, was once a flourishing city along the ancient incense route and is recognized for its well-preserved tombs and monumental rock-cut architecture. The region also includes Dadan, a city that thrived in the 1st millennium BC and was one of the most advanced urban centers of its time.

The exhibition at Larvotto Beach, curated by Arts AlUla and under the patronage of Monaco’s Cultural Affairs Department, invites visitors to experience the beauty and cultural richness of AlUla through the lenses of eight international artists. These artists participated in a residency in AlUla, capturing the region's geological wonders, archaeological significance, and vibrant cultural tapestry.

A Global Perspective on AlUla's Timeless Beauty

The exhibition features works by Moath Alofi, Huda Beydoun, Lance Gerber, Catherine Gfeller, M’hammed Kilito, Prince Michael of Yugoslavia, Matthieu Paley, and Robert Polidori. Each artist brings their unique perspective, using innovative techniques to highlight different aspects of AlUla's heritage. Whether it’s the serene beauty of Shallal Canyon or the majestic tombs of Hegra, the images on display tell a story of a land where history and modernity coexist.

Nora Aldabal, Executive Director of Arts and Creative Industries for the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU), describes AlUla as an endless source of inspiration. "This exhibition is a testament to AlUla's ability to inspire new generations of artists from around the world while promoting Saudi art on the global stage," she says.

An Artistic Collaboration Between Monaco and AlUla

Monaco’s support for this exhibition underscores its long-standing tradition of fostering artistic expression and nurturing new talent. This exhibition marks the first time that the works of AlUla Arts are being shown to the public outside of Saudi Arabia, making Monaco the perfect venue for this cultural exchange.

Visitors can delve deeper into the exhibition by scanning QR codes on the panels, providing access to videos and a digital catalog that offer further insights into the artworks and the rich heritage of AlUla. This exhibition is not just a visual experience but also a digital journey that connects the past, present, and future of this remarkable Saudi region.
