The Oceanographic Institute of Monaco has launched OCEANO Podcast, a dedicated audio series designed to advance its core historical mission: to build understanding, appreciation, and protection of the world's oceans.
Narrated by French actor Charles Berling, the inaugural episode in the institute's "Art and History" collection chronicles the life and work of Louis Tinayre, an explorer-painter whose contributions to early 20th-century oceanography remain largely forgotten by mainstream art history. Having first met Prince Albert I of Monaco at the 1900 Universal Exhibition in Paris, Tinayre subsequently accompanied the prince on major scientific expeditions from 1904 onward, documenting uncharted marine environments from the Azores to the Arctic seas.
Through immersive soundscapes and archival insights, the production illustrates how visual art served as an essential partner to early oceanographic research, capturing environmental conditions before the advent of modern color photography. By pairing historical narrative with environmental advocacy, the podcast underscores how historical art continues to inform contemporary marine conservation efforts.
