At Monaco's Espace 22 Gallery, the 'Art in Motion' exhibition is currently showcasing a diverse array of helmets, interpreted by over 13 artists. This exhibition, running from June 12th to July 10th, features equestrian, triathlon, and urban bicycle helmets, each transformed into unique works of art. Curated by French Product Designer Najette Derni, who founded House of Helmet in 2019, the exhibition brings together artists from Switzerland and the Mediterranean area, demonstrating the innovative integration of art into everyday objects.
"The Princess’ Roses helmet is a warm homage to the memory of Princess Grace and her passion for flowers," Wessel explained to Monaco Life’s Celina Lafuente de Lavotha. "I envisioned a rose garden, with the flowers resting on the geometric lozenges of the Monaco crest, their colors altered to match the rose named after her."
Elizabeth Wessel is an accomplished painter and fashion designer, with her work exhibited internationally, including at the International Art Biennale at the National Museum of China in Beijing. Her art often blends the precise lines of haute couture sketches with a playful, provocative humor. "Feeling a strong need to connect my two disciplines, I started layering fabrics I sewed onto my paintings to achieve a third dimension," Wessel shared. "This process led to paintings that speak to me, with elements extending beyond the canvas to create a feeling of freedom."
An avid rider, Wessel's decision to exhibit a riding helmet stems from her deep connection with horseback riding. "Horseback riding has been transformative for me, instilling discipline and reflecting my state of mind," she revealed. "This unique connection has greatly influenced my art."
Wessel’s ideal working environment includes ample light and space, which she finds essential for her creativity. "Natural light is crucial as it prevents color distortion, and I need room to spread out and see all my work-related materials," she emphasized. Despite enjoying the company of other artists, Wessel prefers to create alone, following her unique artistic vision.
Looking ahead, Wessel dreams of a retrospective showcasing her combined work as a fashion designer and painter.
Other artists participating in the 'Art in Motion' exhibition include Sylvana Aymar, Virginie Broquet, Joelle Cabanne, Patrick Christ, Gianni Depaoli, Jean-Claude Issenmann, Dominica Leccia, Ginny Litscher, Kristelle Marcelin, Yves Masaya, Raphaela MLD, Simone Monney, Sebastien Pridmore, Yapa Bandara, and Anastasia Sabatié.
