Breel Embolo, who came on in the final quarter-hour, made a significant impact by scoring Switzerland's final goal in added time during their 3-1 victory over Hungary.
Known for his performances in major international tournaments, Embolo has previously scored in Euro 2020 and twice in the 2022 World Cup. This Saturday, he continued his streak by scoring in Switzerland's opener against Hungary, becoming the only Swiss player to score in these three competitions, as noted by Opta.
Starting on the bench, Embolo watched as Switzerland took the lead in the first half with goals from Kwadwo Duah (12th minute) and Michel Aebischer (45th minute). Hungary mounted a comeback in the second half, reducing the deficit through Barnabas Varga (66th minute). Murat Yakin then introduced the AS Monaco forward in the 74th minute.
Embolo, energetic and involved, touched the ball 14 times and completed 100% of his passes, some of which were nearly decisive. He sealed Switzerland's victory in added time, capitalizing on a poor clearance by a Hungarian defender, and lobbed the goalkeeper with composure.
This goal marked Embolo's 14th for the national team, making him the first AS Monaco player to score in a Euro since Dado Pršo for Croatia against France in 2004. With this win, Switzerland starts their campaign strongly, tied for second place with Germany.
