During the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique, a truly mythical vehicle graced the famous circuit, marking a celebration that transcends typical automotive milestones. In a display of deep reverence for industrial heritage, His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco participated in a lap of the legendary circuit aboard a Bugatti Type 41, universally known as the "Bugatti Royale." The occasion was a specific nod to the vehicle’s centenary, which is being celebrated throughout the years 1926-2026.
Seated with the Sovereign were two significant figures from the automotive world: Mr. Christophe Piochon, President of Bugatti Automobiles, and Mr. Michel Ferry, Vice-President of the Automobile Club of Monaco. The driving duties themselves were entrusted to the head of the workshop from the prestigious Musée National de l’Automobile - Collection Schlumpf in Mulhouse, France. This choice underscores the exceptional level of expert care required for such an artifact, highlighting the museum's critical role in preserving this unique piece of heritage.
The Bugatti Royale is more than just a rare car; it is a symbol of the ambitious artistic and industrial genius of Ettore Bugatti. Created in the 1920s with the stated goal of being "the most prestigious and powerful car in the world," the vehicle is a mechanical masterpiece. It is powered by a colossal engine of nearly 13 liters and remains today one of the most iconic automobiles ever conceived.
Of the only six units ever produced, the specific model featured, known as the "Coupé Napoléon" or "Coupé du Patron," occupies a distinct place in history. It was long the personal property of Ettore Bugatti himself, before being acquired in 1963 by the Schlumpf brothers. Today, it is considered the centerpiece of the Mulhouse museum collection, often referred to as the "Mona Lisa of automobiles."
This appearance in Monaco was not a random event. It serves as an extension of an official visit made by Prince Albert II to Mulhouse in October 2024, during which the Sovereign explored the extraordinary treasures of the Musée National de l’Automobile - Collection Schlumpf.
Following its star turn on the Monegasque circuit, the public now has a rare opportunity to admire this monument of automotive history up close. The Bugatti Royale will be presented at the Collection de l'Automobile de S.A.S. le Prince de Monaco on Port Hercule from April 27th to May 3rd. Subsequently, it will move to the Top Marques exhibition, appearing on the Collection’s stand from May 7th to May 10th, before finally making its way back to its home in Mulhouse.
The temporary return of the "Coupé Napoléon" to public life serves as a powerful reminder of the lasting impact of visionary design and craftsmanship, and the importance of dedicated preservation.
