In September, the Mediterranean will once again host a unique test of endurance and charity as the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation's Calvi to Monaco Water Bike Challenge makes its comeback. Scheduled for September 6th and 7th, this grueling non-stop race will see five teams of elite athletes and celebrities embark on a 180-kilometer journey from Calvi, Corsica to Larvotto Beach in Monaco.
Originally launched as the Riviera Water Bike Challenge, the event has evolved significantly since its inception. The race, which was first held between Nice and Monaco, now pits participants against the expansive Mediterranean Sea in a rigorous test of stamina and teamwork. Teams will compete to complete the route in the shortest possible time, navigating the challenging waters and unpredictable conditions of the open sea.
This year’s challenge is more than just a race; it is a crucial fundraiser for the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation. The Foundation aims to promote water safety and support international anti-drowning initiatives through its various programs. Gareth Wittstock, General Secretary of the Foundation and Princess Charlene’s brother, reflected on the event’s origins, stating, “We originally envisioned a bold fundraising event that would set new standards. The concept evolved into the Riviera Water Bike Challenge, and now, in the wake of the pandemic, we are excited to bring the Calvi-Monaco route to life.”
Participants will use specially designed water bikes known for their stability and capable of reaching speeds up to 13 km/h. The non-stop format requires competitors to alternate shifts, facing both the physical and mental demands of continuous navigation, including cycling through the night.
Notable figures from sports and entertainment have previously joined the challenge, including Princess Charlene, Formula 1 stars David Coulthard and Felipe Massa, model Victoria Silvstedt, and fighters Conor McGregor and John Smit. Their involvement underscores the event’s blend of high-profile support and serious athleticism.
As the start date approaches, anticipation builds for this extraordinary challenge that combines athletic prowess with a vital cause.
