Against the backdrop of the Mediterranean, the Promenade du Larvotto was transformed into an open-air studio as the Principality’s younger generation traded traditional mediums for spray cans and public spaces.
Organized by the City Hall of Monaco (Mairie de Monaco), the event marked the sixth edition of the Street Art Challenge Junior. Held on a Wednesday in conjunction with the broader UPAINT festival, the competition offers a structured platform for local youth to engage directly with contemporary urban art forms.
The initiative explicitly targets middle and high school students (collégiens and lycéens) enrolled in the Principality’s educational institutions. For this iteration, the challenge brought together two distinct teams of young, aspiring artists.
Unlike rigid academic undertakings, the competition granted the participants total thematic autonomy. The teams were invited to express their collective creativity freely, executing large-scale works centered entirely on themes of their own choosing.

The culmination of the day’s intense artistic effort brought a shift from creation to critique. A specialized jury - composed of professional street artists and established art collectors - was tasked with the difficult responsibility of evaluating the completed installations and determining a standout team.
The initiative highlights Monaco’s ongoing efforts to integrate urban subcultures within its traditional cultural landscape, providing younger residents with visible venues for public expression.
