With travel disruptions becoming a regular issue in Monaco, particularly with evening train service interruptions, carpooling has emerged as a potential solution. The Prince's Government is betting on a variety of transport methods, and carpooling might just be the answer to ease traffic congestion and commuter frustrations.
In 2024 alone, the government recorded 116,000 carpooling journeys, investing over €326,000 into the initiative. This investment comes at a crucial time when the rail service between Nice and Ventimiglia often halts after 9 PM, causing difficulties for travelers. Despite multiple discussions between the Prince's Government, SNCF Réseau, and the PACA Region, a permanent solution for these train service disruptions has yet to be achieved.
Two critical meetings held on September 13 and 16 resulted in temporary solutions, including ensuring train service for the Champions League match between AS Monaco and FC Barcelona. However, the larger problem of ongoing train service suspension remains unsolved.
As the search for viable transport alternatives continues, the government has turned its attention to carpooling. On September 17, a conference on mobility and car-sharing highlighted this option. Attended by key figures like Céline Caron-Dagioni, Minister for Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development, and Adrien Tahon, Managing Director of BlaBlaCar Daily, the event underscored carpooling’s potential as a long-term solution.
Could carpooling be the future of transportation in Monaco, providing relief in the face of frequent train disruptions? With ongoing talks and increased investment in shared mobility, this option is steadily gaining traction.
