Celebrating the Magic of Cinema: The New Season at the Institut Audiovisuel

The Institut Audiovisuel de Monaco (IAM) is set to unveil its exciting new film season, focusing on the theme “La Traversée des Apparences” or “Crossing Over Appearances.” This captivating initiative pays homage to the art of cinema, delving into the nuanced interplay between reality and perception.

As the IAM embarks on this journey, director Vincent Vatrican invites audiences to challenge their viewpoints. The season features a curated selection of films designed to inspire reflection on human nature and the deeper messages conveyed by filmmakers. “It’s a unique opportunity to question what is real and what is merely presented to us,” Vatrican explains.

A Cinematic Feast Every Tuesday

The beloved weekly film series, Les Mardis du Cinéma, has shifted to a 7 PM start time, promising an engaging cinematic experience. The lineup includes a variety of films that explore the intricate dynamics of appearances and the ways cinema shapes our understanding of reality.

Among the highlights is Michelangelo Antonioni’s iconic film,"Blow-Up". This classic revolves around a fashion photographer who inadvertently captures a potential crime scene in his images. It raises compelling questions about the reliability of what we see, urging viewers to reconsider the trustworthiness of images.

Another featured film is Ernst Lubitsch’s 1939 comedy-drama “Ninotchka”, starring the legendary Greta Garbo. The story follows a stoic Soviet commissar whose cold demeanor melts under the warmth of love and the allure of Paris.

Claude Chabrol’s “Les Bonnes Femmes” offers a contemporary critique of youthful aspirations and the deceptions that often cloud our desires, particularly resonant in today’s discussions around societal expectations. Vatrican insists, “This film remains significant in our current cultural context.”

Highlighting Unique Screenings

In addition to the weekly series, IAM has partnered with various organizations to present special screenings. One of the most anticipated films is Chantal Akerman’s *Les Rendez-vous d’Anna*, a restored piece honoring the legacy of this pivotal filmmaker.

The animated feature *The Secret of Kells* will also take center stage, showcasing the artistic journey of a young Irish monk involved in the creation of a renowned manuscript. This screening will be enriched by insights from animator Jean-Paul Commin, along with the film’s creator.

Additionally, “Max et Jérémie”, a crime thriller directed by Claire Devers, will be part of the Monaco en Film series, emphasizing films with direct connections to the Principality. This gripping tale intertwines the lives of a seasoned hitman and an aspiring apprentice, culminating in a thrilling finale set against the backdrop of Monaco.

Engaging Perspectives from Renowned Artists

Film enthusiasts can look forward to a special “film lesson” with actress and director Noémie Lvovsky, in collaboration with the Fondation Prince Pierre. Lvovsky will delve into her creative process, sharing valuable insights into her artistic choices and inspirations.

As the IAM prepares for this new season, it promises to be a vibrant celebration of cinema’s power to inspire, provoke thought, and enhance our understanding of the world around us. With an eclectic mix of classic and contemporary films, this season invites everyone to explore the captivating realm of appearances and reality.
