On Tuesday, June 18, Monaco celebrated a momentous occasion as the Olympic Flame returned to the Principality for only the second time in history and the first since 1968.
Monegasque Formula 1 driver and recent Grand Prix winner, Charles Leclerc, had the distinguished honor of being the first to carry the eternal flame on its journey through Monaco. “It is a great honor for me to be able to carry the Olympic flame here, especially in my home country of Monaco. I am very proud,” Leclerc remarked after the event. He then passed the torch to alpine skier Alexandra Coletti, who represented Monaco in the 2006 Winter Olympics.
Next in line was table tennis player Xiaoxin Yang, who has represented Monaco since 2013, followed by Rudy Rinaldi, a bobsledder who competed in the 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympics. The two athletes completed the flame’s journey past the guards and into Palace Square. There, HSH Prince Albert and HSH Princess Charlene received the eternal flame amidst the cheers of a massive crowd eager to witness this historic moment in the Principality.
