Environmental Initiatives in Monaco – June Highlights

In June, Monaco is hosting a variety of initiatives aimed at reducing its environmental footprint, including World Environment Day, green-themed activities, workshops, and eco-awareness events.

The 2nd Green Shift Festival took place at Larvotto promenade from June 5 to 7. Building on the success of last year's edition, the festival aimed to promote greater awareness and encourage innovative thinking about green issues. Over three days, activities and discussions were led by inspiring individuals, focusing on three themes: reconnecting with the living world, imaginaires de la mer, and ecology and pop culture. The festival featured a packed program, including yoga, meditation, meetings with school pupils, performances, workshops, round tables, and more, all set against the backdrop of Monaco's seaside complex.

From June 5 to July 30, the Environmental Photography Prize exhibition is being held. On June 4, during the Green Shift Festival, the winners of the 2024 Environmental Photography Prize were announced by the Albert II Foundation. The overall prize went to Aaron Gekoski for his photograph “See no evil,” highlighting the exploitation of orangutans by the tourism industry.

Monaco’s commitment to combating cigarette butt pollution continues with the "Monaco Zéro Mégot" campaign running from April to October 2024. The initiative, a collaboration between City Hall, the Tourist and Convention Authority, and SMA, distributes pocket ashtrays to residents and visitors. Additionally, 42 floating “sea bins” have been placed in Port Hercule to clean up the marine environment.

On June 5, World Environment Day, Monaco organized a series of initiatives to raise public awareness about protecting marine and terrestrial environments. The Larvotto promenade was the hub for activities, starting with litter picking by teams on land and sea. The day included discussions on waste, escape games, a “waste mural,” and a “game of the goose” for children, promoting environmental awareness through fun activities.

From June 13 to 15, Monaco participated in the APIdays initiative, dedicated to protecting bees. The event featured craft workshops, presentations on nectar-producing plants, mini-games, quizzes, and more, highlighting the crucial role bees play in maintaining environmental health.

On June 20, Estelle Antognelli, head of the CSR unit at the Monaco Government Tourist and Convention Authority, will participate in the “Tourism Fresk” workshop in Paris. Inspired by the Climate Fresk, this workshop helps tourism professionals understand and transform their sector's environmental impact.

On June 29, the CSR unit will be involved in the “From Seychelles to Monaco” event, celebrating the Seychelles while raising awareness about its environmental challenges. Estelle Antognelli and Adnan Ghezal will lead a workshop on greenhouse gas issues.

The Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, from July 1 to 6, focuses on the future of yachting and the green transition. Organized by the Yacht Club de Monaco, the event brings together industry leaders and engineering students to design alternative propulsion systems. Highlights include races, tech talks, a sea lab showcasing innovative ideas, and round tables on hydrogen use.
