Lewis Hamilton made a triumphant return to victory for the first time since the 2021 Formula 1 season, securing a record-breaking ninth win at the Silverstone Circuit. The British Grand Prix on Sunday, July 7, saw Hamilton achieve this milestone in front of an ecstatic home crowd.
The race was filled with excitement as George Russell, starting from pole position, initially led the pack. A thrilling battle ensued between the Mercedes cars and the McLaren duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri amid variable weather conditions.
As conditions shifted, drivers began switching to intermediate tyres, causing multiple lead changes. Hamilton strategically pitted for slicks one lap before Norris, who faced a slow pit stop, allowing Hamilton to seize the lead as the track dried.
George Russell had to retire due to a water system issue, while Max Verstappen overtook Norris in the final stages to claim second place. Hamilton maintained his lead to secure an emotional victory, marking his record ninth win at a single Grand Prix and his first since the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
Verstappen, despite gaining speed on hard tyres in the closing laps, couldn't catch up to challenge Hamilton and settled for second place, with Norris rounding out the podium.
For Scuderia Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, it was a weekend to forget. After initially making gains, an early switch to intermediate tyres saw him fall back, finishing a disappointing 14th.
The next race of this increasingly intriguing season will take place at the Hungaroring for the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, July 21.
