Hotel Metropole Monte-Carlo: Iconic Rooms, Fine Dining & Guerlain Spa

In a destination that knows luxury better than almost anywhere else, the real challenge is not to impress, but to endure. Some addresses do both. Hotel Metropole Monte-Carlo belongs firmly in that category. A few steps from the Casino de Monte-Carlo, in the heart of the Carré d’Or, the hotel has been part of Monaco’s story since 1886. There is history in its bones, certainly, but what makes the Metropole so relevant now is the way it wears that history lightly. This is not a hotel trapped in nostalgia. It is a grand Belle Époque address that has learned how to evolve without losing its accent.

Its modern chapter began in earnest with Jacques Garcia, whose reinterpretation of the property gave it a new vocabulary: one built on intimacy, drama and Mediterranean ease. Garcia understood that the Metropole did not need to become louder to feel current. Instead, he leaned into what has always made it distinctive—its warmth, its discretion, its sense of theatre—and gave it sharper lines, richer textures and a more contemporary rhythm.

That work continues today. The first phase of the hotel’s ongoing renovation has already revealed newly redesigned rooms and suites, each one conceived with the same polished confidence. On the second floor, cooler blue tones create a sense of calm, while the third floor glows in warmer golden shades that recall Riviera light at the end of the day. Materials are tactile and noble, from embroidered wall fabrics to Calacatta Borghini marble, and Garcia’s custom-designed furnishings bring a residential quality that feels rare in a palace hotel.

The result is a style of luxury that is neither stiff nor showy. It feels lived in, even seductive. Junior Suites are particularly elegant, with clever bespoke pieces that function as both writing desk and dressing table, while freestanding cast-iron bathtubs lend the bathrooms a touch of old-world glamour. The larger suites go further still, unfolding more like private apartments than hotel accommodation. Among the signatures, the Carré d’Or Suite captures the property’s essence beautifully: poised, luminous and unmistakably Monte-Carlo.

Yet what has always set the Metropole apart is that it never relies on rooms alone. It operates as a full world, one that invites guests to linger rather than merely stay. Food is central to that world, and Christophe Cussac now shapes its culinary identity with remarkable range. At the pinnacle is Les Ambassadeurs by Christophe Cussac, a restaurant that won two Michelin stars just nine months after opening in 2024. That says something, but the experience itself says more. The room, designed by Garcia, is warm rather than formal, and the cuisine is rooted in the Mediterranean without becoming predictable. There is generosity here, but also precision. The chef’s table brings diners close to the movement of the kitchen, while bread and dessert trolleys return a sense of ritual to the meal. It is gastronomic dining without coldness—technical, yes, but deeply convivial.

A very different mood awaits at Yoshi, the hotel’s Japanese restaurant. Designed by Didier Gomez and opening onto a serene Japanese garden, it offers a more restrained kind of pleasure. Here, everything is about detail: the cut of sashimi, the theatre of teppanyaki, the final grating of fresh wasabi, the careful selection of sake. It is refined, focused and beautifully composed.

Then there is Odyssey, the hotel’s poolside sanctuary imagined by Karl Lagerfeld. In Monaco, where pool scenes can often feel performative, Odyssey remains one of the most visually compelling and genuinely atmospheric settings in the Principality. Its fresco-style glass installation around the heated seawater pool depicts a journey, creating a dreamlike backdrop for long lunches, late aperitifs or simply a slow afternoon in the sun.

This season, the spirit is resolutely Italian, with ZIA bringing breakfast, lunch, aperitivo and dinner to the terrace in a format that feels festive, relaxed and seductive in exactly the right measure.

Back inside, the Lobby Bar remains one of the most agreeable meeting spots in Monte-Carlo. Chic but never intimidating, it moves easily through the day: coffee in the morning, a light lunch, tea, cocktails, perhaps a cigar later on. Garcia has given it the mood of a well-appointed private salon, and the art collection—featuring works by Picasso, Warhol and Bacon—adds another layer of character without ever feeling forced.

One of the most significant recent additions, however, is the Spa Metropole by Guerlain, opened in summer 2025. If the rest of the hotel is about atmosphere, the spa is about exhale. Designed by Samy Itani, it is intimate and softly lit, with ten treatment rooms, a heat experience, a fitness centre, and a Pedi:Mani:Cure Studio by Bastien Gonzalez. More importantly, it brings with it Guerlain’s particular vision of wellness, one that connects beauty with longevity, movement, sleep and emotional balance.

Three treatments have been created exclusively for the hotel, and each is unmistakably rooted in place. Monaco Glow is a facial inspired by Riviera light; Golden Sand draws on the warmth and mineral calm of sun-heated quartz pebbles; Puissance du Rocher is a more sculpting, energising ritual for face and body. In a region crowded with spas, this one feels especially coherent—luxurious, certainly, but also thoughtful.

That may be the Metropole’s greatest success. It has managed to remain majestic without becoming distant, fashionable without chasing fashion, and deeply rooted in Monaco while still feeling like a world apart. Some hotels are beautiful. Some are legendary. A select few continue to become more interesting with time. The Hotel Metropole Monte-Carlo is one of them.
