The latest census by the Monegasque Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (IMSEE) was conducted on December 31, 2023, determining the number of residences, inhabitants, and their status in the Principality.
Every year, the Monegasque Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (IMSEE) conducts a population census. Starting this year, IMSEE has updated its calculation method by now using residents' registers.
New Figures as of December 31, 2023:
- Total Residents: 38,367
- Foreign Adults: 64.6% (24,772)
- Monegasques: 23.9% (9,179)
- Foreign Schoolchildren (3 to 17 years old): 8.1%
- Foreign Infants Born in Monaco (0 to 2 years old): 1.4%
IMSEE notes a lack of precision for the remaining population due to an older census: “The so-called remaining population, which includes foreign minors aged 3 to 17 not enrolled in schools in the Principality and foreign children born outside Monaco between 2021 and 2023, is estimated based on the 2016 Census data, representing only 2% of the total population.”
IMSEE reports a population growth of 2.8% since the last general census in 2016. From now on, annual census data will be available on the IMSEE website under “Population and Employment.”
There are 141 different nationalities in the Principality. The most numerous are:
- Monegasques: 24%
- French: 22%
- Italians: 20%
- British: 7%
- Russians: 3%
- Swiss: 3%
- Belgians: 3%
- Germans: 2%
- Portuguese: 1%
- Dutch: 1%
Monte-Carlo and La Rousse neighborhoods together house more than 40% of the residents.
