I write to express my profound disappointment and frustration regarding the recent actions of Le Monde, a publication that has long been regarded as a reputable source of news and information. In January 2024, Le Monde chose to publish a series of articles that can only be described as sensationalist gossip aimed at His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco and His Family.
This is not the first time such an attack has occurred. In the 1990s, we faced a similar onslaught when a French deputy sought to withhold a significant portion of Monaco's VAT revenue. Thankfully, our principality's sovereignty and dignity were upheld, thanks to the principled stance of H.S.H. Prince Rainier III.
However, the recent attack by Le Monde is particularly distressing as it not only targets the Prince and His Family but also undermines the entire Monegasque community and its hardworking residents. By giving a platform to a disgruntled former employee who violated professional confidentiality, Le Monde has shown a blatant disregard for journalistic integrity and ethics.
It is crucial for Le Monde to acknowledge that Monaco's financial affairs are conducted under French oversight, and any insinuations of misconduct should be thoroughly investigated before being published. Moreover, the relentless pursuit of scandalous narratives only serves to tarnish Monaco's reputation and stability, undermining the prosperity and opportunities enjoyed by its residents.
As a proud citizen of Monaco, I condemn Le Monde's irresponsible journalism and urge them to uphold the principles of truth and integrity. It is time for Le Monde to reflect on the consequences of their actions and recommit themselves to responsible reporting.
