Making Waves: 20 Years of Accessible Summer at Larvotto’s Handiplage

Monaco's iconic Larvotto beach has always promised sun-soaked elegance—but this year marks a special milestone that brings heart and purpose to its shores. Now in its 20th season, the beloved Handiplage initiative is once again transforming the summer experience for individuals with disabilities, ensuring the Mediterranean’s joy is truly for everyone.

From now until August 31, Larvotto’s dedicated accessible beach zone invites visitors with reduced mobility to immerse themselves in the freedom of the sea. It’s not just a beach—it’s a beacon of inclusion, where innovation and care come together under the Riviera sun.

Thanks to the extended hours introduced last year and now made permanent, the Handiplage operates from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends and public holidays—synchronized perfectly with the lifeguard schedule to ensure safety and peace of mind.

The program is powered by a passionate team of six certified supervisors trained in first aid, whose warm welcome and professional assistance make the experience seamless and uplifting. Whether it's a first dip or a long-awaited return to the water, every moment is infused with freedom and joy.

This season, comfort and convenience take center stage with new features: an accessible outdoor shower, ergonomically designed sun loungers, mobility-friendly seating, gel cushions, and two upgraded waterwheels that allow guests to glide effortlessly from shore to sea. Even the smallest details—like lifejackets and an on-site icebox—speak to the care behind the concept.

Spearheaded by Monaco’s Department of Social Action and Assistance with support from the Club Soroptimiste de Monaco, this initiative continues to inspire across the region. Other nearby destinations—including Menton, Nice, Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, and Cap d’Ail—have followed suit, creating a more inclusive Côte d’Azur for all.

This summer, the Handiplage at Larvotto isn’t just celebrating two decades—it’s setting the standard for what beach life should be: open, accessible, and filled with dignity and delight for everyone.
