Mandarin Oriental Savoy, Zurich: A Reimagined Icon in the Heart of the City

In a city where heritage and precision shape every detail, the arrival of Mandarin Oriental Savoy, Zurich marks a defining moment in Zurich’s luxury landscape. Opened in 2023, the hotel breathes new life into one of the city’s most historic addresses, seamlessly blending 19th-century grandeur with contemporary refinement.

Set on the prestigious Paradeplatz, the hotel occupies a landmark building dating back to 1838. Once known as the Hotel Baur en Ville, it welcomed illustrious guests such as Franz Liszt, Charles Dickens and Richard Wagner—names that still echo through its corridors. Today, following an extensive renovation led by acclaimed designer Tristan Auer, the property has been transformed into an intimate urban retreat that feels both timeless and distinctly modern.

The interiors strike a careful balance. Classical architecture remains intact, while soft tones, tactile materials and subtle metallic accents bring a sense of quiet sophistication. Public spaces—particularly the Mandarin Lounge, with its inviting fireplace—offer a calm refuge from the rhythm of the city just outside. With only 80 rooms and suites, the hotel maintains an exclusive feel. Many of the suites are among the largest in Zurich, with generous layouts designed for both leisure and longer stays.

The Grand Corner Suite captures the essence of the property, with its high-floor views over Paradeplatz and elegant blend of marble, wood and custom furnishings. For something more expansive, the Penthouse Suite and Presidential Suite introduce private dining areas, curated artwork and a residential atmosphere that makes it easy to forget you are in the centre of a bustling city. At the top end, the Royal Suite unfolds across multiple connecting spaces, offering complete privacy for families or extended stays.

Dining plays a central role in the experience. At Savoy Brasserie & Bar, the atmosphere is lively, with a menu that draws from international influences while incorporating Swiss and Mediterranean notes. It’s the kind of place that moves effortlessly from business lunch to evening cocktails, especially when the terrace opens during the warmer months.

For a more refined culinary moment, ORSINI stands out. Led by acclaimed chef Antonio Guida, the restaurant has already earned a Michelin star and 17 GaultMillau points, positioning it among Zurich’s most sought-after dining destinations. The cuisine is rooted in Italian tradition but shaped by a contemporary sensibility, with each dish carefully composed yet full of character.

Upstairs, the rooftop bar 1838 offers a different perspective—literally and atmospherically. With sweeping views over Zurich’s rooftops and towards the lake, it recalls the building’s original Belvédère terrace, once considered one of the first rooftop bars in the world. Today, it’s a vibrant setting where cocktails, music and sunset views come together effortlessly.

At Mandarin Oriental Savoy, Zurich, wellness is approached with quiet intention, offering a moment of balance within the rhythm of the city. While the property sits in the very heart of the city, its atmosphere allows for a sense of retreat—where guests can slow down and recharge in a discreet, refined setting. The hotel’s fitness centre is designed for both routine and performance, equipped with state-of-the-art machines and open 24 hours a day. Whether it’s an early morning session before meetings or a late workout after exploring the city, the space adapts effortlessly to individual schedules. Personal training sessions are also available, offering tailored guidance for those seeking a more focused approach.

Beyond physical activity, wellness here extends into the overall experience. The calm of the interiors, the soft lighting, and the thoughtful design create an environment that encourages rest and clarity. Even the Mandarin Lounge, with its fireplace and relaxed atmosphere, becomes part of this holistic approach—an ideal place to pause, reflect, or simply enjoy a quiet moment.

Location remains one of the hotel’s strongest assets. Just steps from Bahnhofstrasse and within easy walking distance of the Old Town and Lake Zurich, it places guests at the centre of the city’s cultural and social life. Yet inside, there is a sense of calm that feels carefully preserved.
More than a hotel, Mandarin Oriental Savoy, Zurich is a continuation of a long story—one that began nearly two centuries ago and now enters a new chapter with quiet confidence.
