PONT-SCORFF, France - On World Snow Leopard Day, the Jardin Animalier Rainier III highlighted the enduring legacy of Pamir and Doutchka, the first snow leopards born in France.

Born on May 21, 1989, at the Zoo de Pont-Scorff in Morbihan, the cubs have since become emblematic residents of Les Terres de Nataé, the wildlife park that succeeded the original zoo.

In September of that same year, the pair received honorary citizenship from the city, with Pamir sponsored by Prince Edmond de Polignac and Doutchka by Prince Rainier III.

The snow leopard, agile and nearly invisible amid Central Asia’s snow-covered peaks, relies on its long tail for cover while sleeping and thick paw pads to prevent slipping on ice. Yet poaching, prey depletion and climate change increasingly threaten the species’ future.
