Material and Mortality: Mónika Üveges at the Ateliers du Quai Antoine Ier

At the intersection of painting and sculpture, the work of Budapest-born visual artist Mónika Üveges examines the boundaries connecting organic life, human physicality, and posthuman theories. Üveges co-founded the SKURC Art Association and has received prominent honors, including the Kahan Award and multiple Gyula Derkovits Art Prizes.

Her practice builds on hybrid, relief-like objects that bridge the visual languages of fine art and design, exploring the threshold between the human and non-human, as well as the natural and artificial. Incorporating unconventional and organic materials - ranging from synthetic resins and silicone to ash, tar, and parched vegetation - her work investigates themes of transformation, bodily vulnerability, and the cyclical nature of decay and renewal.

Currently in residence at Monaco’s Ateliers du Quai Antoine Ier under a program supported by SOGEDA, Üveges is developing a new series constructed from locally gathered materials. The residency project focuses on the delicate, impermanent nature of existence, using physical matter to mirror the fragility of the human body within its surrounding ecological landscape.
