Principality of Monaco and the Kingdom of Bhutan have formally established diplomatic relations, signaling a new chapter in international cooperation between the two nations.
The agreement was solidified on June 8, 2026, at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The establishment of these ties highlights a shared commitment to sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and a high quality of life. Both nations are recognized for their prioritization of policies that place human well-being and environmental preservation at the center of their public agendas. Bhutan, famously known as the world’s first carbon-negative country, bases its development strategy on the principle of Gross National Happiness.
Following the signing ceremony, the two representatives identified several sectors for potential bilateral cooperation, including sustainable tourism, education, environmental protection, and sport. The move further expands Monaco’s international diplomatic network and reinforces the commitment of both countries to multilateralism within the framework of the United Nations. The representatives expressed confidence that this partnership will strengthen the bonds of friendship between the two countries as they work toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
