One of Monaco’s most cherished traditions returned this June as residents and visitors gathered to celebrate Saint-Jean, a centuries-old midsummer festival that brought together folklore, music and community spirit in the heart of the Principality.
Organised by the Mairie de Monaco in partnership with the Saint-Jean Club, the two-day celebration paid tribute to the feast of Saint John through a series of traditional events centred around the symbolic batafoegu — the ceremonial bonfire that has long been associated with midsummer festivities across the Mediterranean.
The celebrations began at the Place du Palais, where locals and visitors gathered beneath the historic walls of the Prince’s Palace. Following a private ceremony in the Palatine Chapel, the batafoegu was lit, illuminating Palace Square as dancers from La Palladienne performed traditional folk dances. The warm glow of the bonfire and the festive atmosphere created a memorable evening that reflected Monaco’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage.
The following evening, the celebrations continued at the Place des Moulins with a traditional procession that brought together Municipal Councillors, flag bearers, representatives of Monaco’s Committees of Traditions, the Municipal Band, members of the U Cantin d’A Roca choir and dancers from La Palladienne. Adding an international dimension to this year’s festivities, the Association Folklorique des Portugais de Monaco joined the procession and performances, showcasing the multicultural character of the Principality.
As tradition dictates, the procession was led by the young Saint Jean accompanied by his lamb before participants gathered for a religious ceremony at the Église Saint-Charles. The evening culminated with the lighting of the second batafoegu, accompanied by choral performances and lively folk dancing.
Throughout both evenings, the atmosphere was joyful and welcoming, with families, residents and visitors coming together to celebrate a tradition that has endured for generations. Blending history, faith and community spirit, Saint-Jean once again highlighted the cultural richness and enduring traditions that continue to define Monaco.
