This July, the Yacht Club de Monaco will once again place the Principality at the forefront of maritime innovation as it hosts the 13th edition of the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge from 8 to 11 July. What began in 2014 as a student engineering competition has evolved into one of the most influential platforms for sustainable yachting technologies, attracting leading universities, shipyards, engineers, and industry experts from around the world.
This year's edition marks a new milestone for the event, with a record 56 teams from 22 countries set to compete. For the first time, teams from the United States and China will join the challenge, highlighting the growing international significance of Monaco's commitment to cleaner and more efficient maritime solutions.
Organised as part of the Yacht Club de Monaco's "Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting" initiative, the event focuses on developing and testing real-world alternatives to conventional marine propulsion systems. Participants will compete across four categories, ranging from energy-efficient vessels and autonomous boats to experimental prototypes and commercially viable zero-emission yachts.
One of the event's highlights is the Open Sea Xperience, which offers visitors a unique opportunity to discover the next generation of sustainable boats already nearing commercial deployment. Among the most anticipated entries are the 16-metre Wia 520HT electric yacht and Weenav's powerful KRONOS 300 electric propulsion system, demonstrating how rapidly the industry is embracing alternative energy solutions.
Beyond the competition itself, the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge has become an important forum for discussion and collaboration. Two major conferences dedicated to advanced yachting technologies, alternative fuels, battery systems, hydrogen, methanol, and future propulsion concepts will bring together some of the industry's leading voices.
The event also serves as a valuable bridge between education and industry. Through mentoring programmes and career initiatives, students have the opportunity to connect directly with major yachting groups including Oceanco, Ferretti Group, Azimut Benetti, and Lürssen.
With more than 1,000 students expected in Monaco this summer, the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge continues to shape the future of sustainable mobility at sea while reinforcing the Principality's position as a global hub for innovation and advanced yachting.
