The Principality may soon witness an unprecedented moment in its history. According to the Holy See Press Office, a visit by Pope Leo XIV to Monaco is currently under consideration for the end of March 2026.
The initiative follows Prince Albert II’s official visit to the Vatican on 17 January, during which the Sovereign formally invited the newly elected pontiff to the Principality. While details remain under discussion, the trip could take the form of a brief one-day visit.
If confirmed, it would mark the first time a reigning pope sets foot on Monegasque soil. The potential visit carries strong symbolic weight. Catholicism is Monaco’s state religion, and it was under Pope Leo XIII in 1887 that the Principality gained ecclesiastical autonomy with the creation of its own diocese. Significantly, Leo XIV chose his papal name in homage to Leo XIII, remembered for his teachings on social justice.
Elected on 8 May 2025, Pope Leo XIV has already undertaken international visits to Turkey and Lebanon. Monaco would represent his second foreign trip of 2026. Official confirmation is expected in the coming weeks, with anticipation already growing across the Principality.
