In observance of the International Day for Biological Diversity, the Embassy of Monaco in Italy hosted a special screening on May 22, highlighting the Principality’s ongoing commitment to marine conservation.
The event, held in collaboration with the Institut Français Centre Saint-Louis of Rome, featured the documentary Les gardiennes de la nature (Guardians of Nature) as part of the “Les Voix du Vivant” festival. Produced by the company Theorem and broadcast by TV Monaco, the film explores the lives of four women dedicated to protecting the Mediterranean Sea, with efforts spanning from Andalusia and Greece to the Aeolian Islands and France.
Attendees included the film’s director, Emmanuel Descombes, and Monegasque producer François Aunay.
During her address, H.E. Anne Eastwood, Ambassador of Monaco to Italy, underscored the deep-seated connection between the Mediterranean and the Principality’s own identity and history. She noted the Prince’s consistent commitment to marine biodiversity, pointing to significant international progress such as the BBNJ Agreement (Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction), which entered into force earlier this year. Ambassador Eastwood stressed that the future of the Mediterranean depends on individual and collective action to ensure its preservation for generations to come.
The screening was followed by a roundtable discussion moderated by Jacopo Monzini, an international expert in natural resource management. The panel featured director Emmanuel Descombes and marine biologist Giulia Bernardi, one of the film’s featured protagonists.
