Monaco Grand Prix 2026: Double Pit Stop Rule to Stay, FIA Remains Open to Adjustments

The 2026 Monaco Grand Prix is shaping up to be another thrilling event, with the controversial two-pit stop regulation likely to remain in place—at least for now. Introduced by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) at last year’s Monaco race, the rule aimed to inject excitement into a circuit where overtaking has always been notoriously challenging.

Despite its intention, the new regulation drew a polarized response from drivers. Max Verstappen and George Russell openly criticized the measure, with Verstappen likening the race to “Mario Kart,” highlighting the frustration it caused among top competitors. Many hoped the rule would enhance strategy and unpredictability, but the reaction suggested it fell short of expectations.

Nevertheless, the FIA has signaled it is willing to reconsider. Speaking to Le Singulier, a senior official acknowledged the debate surrounding the pit stop mandate and emphasized the organization’s openness to change. “We are prepared to study any credible proposals,” he said, underlining that discussions with teams, drivers, and local authorities will continue in the months leading up to the 2026 event.

For now, though, teams must plan their strategies around the two-stop format. The 83rd edition of the Monaco Grand Prix, set for June 2026, will retain this regulation while the debate continues. Adjusting such a high-profile race is no simple task; all parties involved must balance safety, entertainment, and competitive fairness.

As anticipation builds in the Principality, fans and critics alike will be watching closely to see if further tweaks are introduced before the starting lights go out. Until then, the unique challenge of two pit stops on the streets of Monaco remains a defining feature of one of Formula 1’s most iconic races.
