In a heartwarming tradition blending environmental responsibility with community joy, the Monaco Town Council hosted the 16th edition of its annual “One Birth = One Tree” initiative on April 30 at Parc Princesse Antoinette. The ceremony, attended by Mayor Georges Marsan and key municipal leaders including Deputy Mayor Marjorie Crovetto and Jacques Pastor, honored every child born in the Principality in 2024 with the symbolic planting of a tree.
This year, 721 trees have taken root—each one representing a new life welcomed into the Monaco community. The trees were planted primarily in the Pali forest, a state-owned green space near the Principality, helping to expand and preserve the area’s rich biodiversity.
Launched in 2008 under the patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II, the initiative is Monaco’s contribution to the global “Plant for the Planet” movement, which aims to plant one trillion trees worldwide. The local effort is organized in partnership with the National Forestry Commission (ONF) and reflects the Council’s growing commitment to sustainability.
Since its inception, nearly 15,000 trees have been planted as part of the program, and its environmental reach continues to grow. In 2020, the initiative became part of the Town Council’s broader “Ilot d’Avenir” plan—an ambitious strategy introducing climate-resilient species to regional forest areas. Designed as a model for Mediterranean reforestation, the program aims to combat the long-term effects of climate change while reinforcing Monaco’s environmental leadership.
This annual tree-planting tradition not only marks the start of new lives, but also lays down strong roots for a greener, more sustainable future—one sapling at a time.
