In a significant move toward enhancing regional connectivity and sustainability, Monaco has partnered with SNCF Sud Azur to introduce two state-of-the-art REGIO N2 trains. Announced on December 20, this agreement aims to bolster the rail network serving Grasse, Cannes, Monaco, and Ventimiglia, ensuring smoother and more efficient travel for millions of passengers.
With a seating capacity of 1,000 per train, these modern additions will help alleviate the growing demand for rail transport in the region. By 2027, the new trains will be operational, complementing the Monaco Monte-Carlo station’s role as the third busiest TER station in the area. The station already recorded an impressive 8 million passengers in 2023, with a 20% surge in users in early 2024.
To address peak-hour congestion, the expanded fleet will enable four extended trains to run between Cannes and Monaco, significantly improving passenger flow management. Outside peak hours, commuters can expect trains every 15 minutes, making public transport a more reliable alternative to private vehicles.
The initiative, backed by a €40.4 million investment from the State of Monaco, also includes a strategic partnership with Région Sud. Maintenance of the new trains will take place at the advanced Nice Saint-Roch center, reducing downtime and ensuring consistent service quality.
This project underscores Monaco’s commitment to sustainable mobility, positioning the Principality as a leader in eco-friendly transport solutions. By reducing reliance on private cars, Monaco not only enhances travel efficiency but also contributes to regional environmental goals. As these new trains prepare to roll out, passengers can look forward to a more seamless and sustainable commuting experience.
