In a formal expansion of its international human rights commitments, the Principality of Monaco has officially joined the Alliance for Torture-Free Trade. The accession occurred on June 9, 2026, signaling the microstate’s alignment with an international framework designed to restrict the commercial flow of goods utilized for capital punishment and severe maltreatment.
The political declaration was formalized during a ceremony held in Brussels at the European External Action Service. H.E. Mr. Frédéric Labarrère, Ambassador and Head of the Mission of Monaco to the European Union, signed the document on behalf of the Prince’s Government. The foundational text of the declaration was originally adopted in New York on the sidelines of the 72nd United Nations General Assembly.
Established and co-chaired by the European Union, Argentina, and Mongolia, the cross-regional coalition seeks to transcend purely political, economic, or geographic interests. With Monaco’s entry, the bloc comprises approximately 60 states collectively committed to prohibiting the trade of goods linked directly to torture and the death penalty.

By entering the Alliance, Monaco aims to reinforce collective global actions concerning human rights. Official channels noted that the decision reiterates the Principality’s broader institutional commitment to prohibiting all forms of torture, as well as cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatments under any circumstances.
