The Principality of Monaco has commenced its annual vehicle registration renewal campaign, an administrative milestone for residents that underscores the government’s ongoing commitment to modernization and sustainability.
Beginning September 1 and running through December 31, all registered motorists must renew their vehicle registration to retain legal driving status into the new year. The process, which includes affixing a validation stamp to both the license plate and registration certificate, is mandatory.
Bertrand Vanzo, head of the Traffic Documents Service, confirmed that the renewal system has been streamlined, with digital options now prioritized. “Online renewal remains the most efficient method,” he said, though applications may also be submitted by mail or in person at the service’s new offices on the Promenade de l’Honoré II.
Monaco currently has approximately 143,000 registered vehicles, including nearly 6,000 electric models. Registration remains free for electric vehicles, part of the principality’s broader push toward eco-friendly mobility. Fees for other vehicles range from €50 for private owners to as much as €2,000 for commercial vehicles, depending on engine capacity.
Authorities emphasized the importance of completing renewals by the December 31 deadline. Vehicles not renewed by year’s end will be removed from the registry. While re-registration is possible in January, the procedure is more complex and costly.
In tandem with the campaign, Monaco continues to explore a gradual move toward fully digital registration validation. Current stickers are tamper-resistant, designed to tear upon removal, reducing the risk of fraud.
The Traffic Documents Service remains open weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., providing continuous access for residents. Officials strongly advise against delaying renewal, citing both legal obligations and convenience.
