The Jardin Animalier Rainier III in Monaco has welcomed the start of its season with the distinctive arrival of its Coscoroba swans (Coscoroba coscoroba), a species known for heralding the change each year at the zoo.
The birds are the traditional openers of the season. These swans lay between 4 and 6 eggs, with an incubation period generally lasting from 33 to 36 days.
Their name derives from their sonorous and resonant call, described as “cos-cor-cor-ooo,” in which the first syllable is longer and pitched higher.
The Jardin Animalier Rainier III, a small but notable zoological garden in Monaco, maintains these South American waterfowl as part of its collection, reflecting efforts to showcase diverse avian species in a compact, Mediterranean setting.
