This September, Monaco's middle school students will step into a brand-new educational facility on the Îlot Pasteur, marking the end of an era for the aging and cramped Charles III College. The new school, located at 7 Promenade Honoré II, will accommodate up to 1,500 students at full capacity and is set to be inaugurated in mid-September in the presence of Prince Albert II and the students.
Designed by Monegasque architect François Lallemand and his agency Square Architecte, the construction of this 23,000 square meter institution was a significant technical challenge, given Monaco's dense and limited space. The school's unique design features a mix of concrete and steel—a first for Monaco—highlighted by the X-shaped metal structures that are both aesthetic and structural.
Inside, the school is equipped with modern facilities, including classrooms designed for 25 students each, a multi-sport gymnasium, a 300-seat amphitheater, and a 25-meter swimming pool. Additionally, the school offers two recreation areas: one at ground level for younger students and another on the top floor with stunning views of the Fontvieille harbor and the Prince's Palace.
The school's central location makes it easily accessible on foot for 90% of the students, a significant improvement from the more isolated Charles III College. A new public parking facility with 816 spaces has also been opened to accommodate those arriving by car. As a further enhancement to the community, a new 3,200 square meter media library is scheduled to open near the school in early 2025.
