In an innovative move to alleviate traffic woes, Monaco has unveiled the "Monaco Est" exit slip road from the A8 motorway. Officially opened on January 9, 2024, after three years of construction, this project marks a significant step in improving traffic flow in and around Monaco. The new junction, known as junction 58, provides an additional access route to the Principality, targeting daily traffic of around 50,000 people.
Designed to ease congestion through La Turbie, on the A500 and the Monaco tunnel, the new route also aims to reduce traffic load on the frequently congested A8 motorway, particularly during peak summer months. The new access is expected to accommodate an estimated 3,000 cars daily, offering a tangible solution to the region's traffic challenges.
This €6.06 million project, with contributions from Monaco, Vinci Autoroutes, Alpes-Maritimes, and the French Riviera Community, reflects a collaborative effort to enhance regional mobility. Notably, motorists will incur a three-euro fee to use this exit.
The inauguration, attended by Monegasque and French officials including Minister of State Pierre Dartout and the President of the National Council Brigitte Boccone-Pagès, symbolizes a forward-looking approach to transportation in the region. Boccone-Pagès highlighted the ramp's role in fostering better mobility between Monaco and the Alpes-Maritimes, hinting at future transportation projects like a maritime shuttle and an express metro connecting Nice and Monaco.
