Near Triumph: Noam Yaron’s Epic Calvi-to-Monaco Swim Ends Just Short of Goal

After five grueling days and four nights at sea, Israeli endurance swimmer Noam Yaron came heartbreakingly close to completing one of the most extraordinary feats in open-water swimming: a 180-kilometre solo crossing from Calvi, Corsica, to Monaco. Exhausted and drained, Yaron was forced to abandon the attempt just two kilometres from the finish line.

This summer’s attempt marked a step forward from last year, when he had to stop after 103 kilometres. “We are reassured by his progress,” his team shared, “He is resting and recovering from this superhuman effort. He is deeply moved by the messages of support he has received.”

The journey was nothing short of epic. Over 100 hours in open water left Yaron sleep-deprived, close to hypothermia, and physically battered by salt irritation and burns. At times, he suffered disorientation and hallucinations, compounded by challenging conditions, with waves of up to 60 centimetres testing every ounce of his stamina.

Beyond the extraordinary physical challenge, Yaron’s swim carried a vital environmental message. Traversing one of the Mediterranean’s largest protected marine areas, he called attention to the urgent need for ocean conservation, urging protection of at least 30% of the seas by 2030 and reinforcing the significance of the Pelagos Sanctuary.

Though the finish line remained just out of reach, Noam Yaron’s courage and determination captivated the sporting world, inspiring both awe and reflection. His swim serves as a reminder of human resilience—and the fragile beauty of our oceans.
