New Nice-Milan Train Route Omits Monaco Stop

A new train service between Nice and Milan, announced by Treni Turistici Italiani, a subsidiary of Trenitalia, is set to begin in August, but without stopping in Monaco. Despite the initial excitement surrounding the return of this route, Monegasque authorities have not permitted the stop due to restrictions on diesel locomotives at the Monaco train station.

Service Details and Features

The Nice-Milan service, which commences on August 3rd, offers a nostalgic travel experience with a restaurant car and cabins accommodating four to six passengers. The route will include stops in Ventimiglia, Alassio, Genoa, and Pavia. Described as embodying "Italian good taste," the train promises a comfortable and stylish journey from the Italian business hub to the French Riviera.

Future Plans for Electric Locomotives

Luigi Cantamessa, CEO of FS Treni Turistici Italiani, has revealed plans to upgrade the train to an electric locomotive by next year, which would allow it to make stops in Monaco. This development is eagerly anticipated, as it would integrate Monaco into the route, aligning with the Principality's environmental standards.

Weekend Service Schedule

For now, the Nice-Milan train will operate exclusively on weekends throughout August, offering round trips that take approximately 6.5 hours each way. This new service aims to provide a convenient and enjoyable travel option for weekend trips between these two iconic cities.

In addition to the Nice-Milan service, Trenitalia has hinted at the launch of another route from Nice to Turin. This expansion is part of Trenitalia's broader strategy to enhance connectivity between France and Italy, offering more travel options for both business and leisure passengers.

While the initial service omits Monaco, the future inclusion of an electric locomotive represents a commitment to sustainability and a potential expansion of the route. This change is expected to boost the appeal of the service, making it a more attractive option for travelers wishing to visit Monaco as part of their journey.

The new Nice-Milan train service marks a significant enhancement in cross-border travel between France and Italy. Although the current exclusion of Monaco is a setback, the planned introduction of electric locomotives next year offers hope for a more inclusive and environmentally friendly service in the future.
