The Principality of Monaco is set to welcome the Olympic Flame, carried by six distinguished Monegasque torchbearers, on Tuesday, June 18, 2024.
At 2:15 PM, the relay will commence at Port Hercule in front of the statue of Juan Manuel Fangio, with Formula 1 champion Charles Leclerc as the first torchbearer. Following him, the Flame will be passed to skier Alexandra Coletti, table tennis player Xiaoxin Yang, and bobsleigh pilot Rudy Rinaldi. The final handover will be to Their Serene Highnesses Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene at the statue of Malizia, located at the Place du Palais.
Public viewing is available at the start of the relay along Avenue du Port, at the corner of Place du Marché, and Place du Palais.
While awaiting the torchbearers at Place du Palais, spectators can enjoy a specially curated montage of archival footage by the Audiovisual Institute and the Archives of the Palace of Monaco. This presentation will commemorate Monaco’s participation in the Paris Olympics 100 years ago, the bronze medal achievement by Monegasque architect Julien Médecin (1894-1986) for his urban planning drawings, the Olympic Championship title of John B. Kelly in rowing, and the first passage of the Olympic Flame through Monaco 56 years ago en route to the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble.
To mark this event and throughout the Olympic period, the upper gate of the Rampe Major, dated 1533 and on the Flame's route, will be adorned with visuals celebrating John B. Kelly (1889-1960), father of Princess Grace and grandfather of H.S.H. Prince Albert II, who won a gold medal in rowing (double sculls) at the 1924 Paris Olympics.
Those planning to witness the Olympic Flame's passage should be aware of traffic closures between 1 PM and 3 PM. Pedestrian access to the Rampe Major will be restricted between 1 PM and 2:45 PM. Visitors are advised to stay within the designated areas along the route, using marked crossings, particularly at the bottom of Avenue de la Porte Neuve between 2 PM and 2:45 PM.
To ensure safety, checkpoints will be in place along the entire route and at the entrances to Place du Palais.
