Long before the harbor of Monaco became synonymous with modern Formula 1 pageantry, the Principality’s racing identity was forged on its winding streets by one of its own.

Marking the anniversary of the birth of Louis Chiron - born in Monte Carlo on August 3, 1899 - the Automobile Club de Monaco has reaffirmed the lingering impact of the legendary driver whose career spanned over three decades. Chiron remains a foundational figure in Monégasque motorsport, revered as the first home-born driver to win the Monaco Grand Prix, claiming victory behind the wheel of a Bugatti Type 51 in 1931.

Chiron’s influence extends well past his pre-war Grand Prix triumphs. In 1955, competing in Monaco at nearly 56 years old, he finished sixth, setting a record as the oldest driver ever to start a Formula 1 Grand Prix race.

Today, his legacy remains embedded throughout the Principality and within the halls of the Automobile Club de Monaco, where archival tributes and honors continue to preserve the history of a driver who helped transform Monaco into the epicenter of international motor racing.
