Kirsty Coventry’s election as the 10th President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) marks a pivotal moment in Olympic history. Chosen during the 144th IOC Session in Costa Navarino, Greece, she becomes the first woman and the first African representative to lead the prestigious organization.

Prince Albert II, who attended the historic session, was quick to extend his “heartfelt congratulations” to Coventry, recognizing the significance of this milestone in shaping the future of the Olympic movement. As a longtime IOC member since 1985 and Chair of the Sustainability and Legacy Commission, the Prince reaffirmed his commitment to the Olympic values that Coventry will now uphold.

A Champion Takes the Helm

A decorated Zimbabwean swimmer and seven-time Olympic medalist, Coventry will assume her new role on June 23, 2025, taking over from Thomas Bach, who has held the position since 2013. Her leadership will be crucial as preparations continue for the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games.

Her election holds particular resonance in Monaco, where she has longstanding ties. Coventry previously trained in the Principality at the invitation of Princess Charlene, herself an Olympian, in the run-up to the London 2012 Games. Their sporting camaraderie now adds a personal dimension to the connection between Monaco and the new IOC leadership.

Upon her election, Coventry expressed deep gratitude, stating, “This is an extraordinary moment. As a nine-year-old girl, I never imagined standing here today, giving back to this incredible Movement of ours.”

This historic shift aligns with the IOC’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in global sports governance. As the Prince’s Palace highlighted in its official statement, Coventry’s appointment reflects the evolving landscape of international sport and its universal values.
