Prince Albert II of Monaco has sent a formal message to US President Donald Trump following a shooting incident outside the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, in which one Secret Service officer was wounded.
In his dispatch, the Sovereign of Monaco expressed “emotion” upon learning of the events and described the attack as an “act of exceptional gravity.” The Prince said he was relieved that the President, the First Lady, and all those present at the event escaped unharmed.
The shooting took place on Saturday night outside the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, held at the Washington Hilton. According to authorities, a gunman opened fire at a security checkpoint near the ballroom where the annual gathering was underway, prompting the evacuation of President Trump, the First Lady, and senior administration officials.
One Secret Service officer was struck during the incident but was protected by a bullet-resistant vest and is expected to recover. No additional injuries were reported.
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, was arrested at the scene. Investigators reported that Allen had previously sent writings to family members indicating an intent to target members of the Trump administration.
In his message, Prince Albert II also extended his thoughts on behalf of the Monegasque people, as well as Princess Charlene and his family. He expressed “solidarity” with the American President, his wife, and the United States more broadly.
The letter was sent directly to the White House and signed by the Prince in his official capacity as Sovereign of Monaco.
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner, a long-standing tradition bringing together political leaders, journalists, and public figures, was taking place with President Trump attending this year’s edition after previously declining participation during his first term.
The incident has prompted heightened attention to security measures surrounding major political events in Washington, though authorities have confirmed that the situation was quickly contained.
