On September 26, Prince Albert II of Monaco visited two apiary schools in Rwanda, organized by the French Observatory of Apidology (OFA), as part of Thierry Dufresne’s initiative. The visit, conducted under the Prince’s foundation, aimed to protect bees and biodiversity. These apiary schools, located at Foyer de Charité « Vierge des Pauvres » in Ruhondo and Hôtel One & Only in the Parc des Volcans, train vulnerable women in beekeeping to achieve financial independence through honey production.
During the visit, the Prince engaged with trainees, discussing the positive impact of beekeeping on their livelihoods and dignity. He also inaugurated a new apiary school in Ruhengeri. Since 2022, OFA has led a research program in Rwanda on propolis, a bee product with antiseptic and antifungal properties, enhancing the global propolis collection.
