The intersection of surrealist art and immersive cinema will take center stage on Aug. 6, 2026, as the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco presents a dedicated evening program at its 56, boulevard du Jardin Exotique grounds. The event pairs an exploration of avant-garde visual art with an open-air projection of director Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s acclaimed feature Memoria (2021).
The nocturnal gathering begins at 6:00 p.m. with food and beverage service curated by Monaco Vinalia Gourmet at Le Régulus. Between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., the museum will offer complimentary admission to the exhibition “Victor Brauner, L’Aventure magique,” giving visitors an opportunity to view Brauner’s surrealist works before the evening’s main screening.
At 9:00 p.m., the program transitions outdoors for the open-air screening of Memoria. The 136-minute film, presented in its original language with French subtitles, follows a Scottish orchid cultivator, played by Tilda Swinton, who travels to Bogotá, Colombia, to visit her ailing sister. Her journey turns introspective and sensory as she seeks the source of a loud, mysterious sound that only she can perceive. Along the way, she crosses paths with a French archaeologist managing a local construction project and a young local musician, played by Jeanne Balibar and Elkin Díaz.
Weerasethakul’s work continues the surrealist tradition of interweaving dreamscapes, memory, and metaphysics. Memoria received the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2021, marking another major international honor for the director who previously won the Palme d’Or in 2011 for Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives.
Admission to both the exhibition and the outdoor projection is free, though space remains limited. Guests are required to reserve their attendance in advance by emailing the museum directly.
