The Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo (OPMC) launches its 2025–2026 season on Sunday, September 21, at the Auditorium Rainier III. The concert not only marks the beginning of a rich new programme but also the start of Kazuki Yamada’s final year as chief conductor, closing a decade of artistic leadership that has shaped the orchestra’s international profile.
A Franco-German Opening
The season opens with a programme that bridges French elegance and German imagination. Camille Saint-Saëns’ Phaéton and Symphony No. 1 set the tone with their refined Romanticism, while Richard Strauss’ Fantastic Variations on a Theme of Knightly Character from Don Quixote promises narrative depth and orchestral brilliance.
Taking centre stage will be Spanish cellist Pablo Ferrández, this year’s artist-in-residence. A laureate of the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition and an exclusive Sony Classical recording artist, Ferrández has already captivated Monaco audiences, performing with the OPMC in 2024 alongside violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. His return underscores the orchestra’s commitment to blending tradition with the vitality of new generations.
A Season of Farewell and Celebration
This year carries particular weight for the orchestra as it prepares to bid farewell to Kazuki Yamada. Over the past ten years, the Japanese maestro has left a lasting imprint on the OPMC, strengthening its reputation while forging deep ties with audiences. His final concert in June 2026, featuring Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, will stand as a universal ode to unity and a fitting conclusion to his tenure.
Beyond the opening night, the season promises 36 Grande Saison concerts, chamber music recitals, and the much-anticipated return of the Mozart Festival in January 2026.
