Deep within the archives of the Musée océanographique de Monaco lie historical documents and physical records that recall the foundational era of modern oceanography. Among these preserved items are vintage posters and sepia photographs detailing the early scientific expeditions led by Prince Albert I of Monaco.
Prominent among the archive’s historic illustrations is a detailed drawing of Lithodes grimaldii, a deep-sea crab species discovered during Prince Albert I's oceanographic campaigns. The species was formally named in honor of the Grimaldi family.
Beyond their artistic quality, the archived documents record a period when maritime expeditions systematically expanded scientific understanding of marine ecosystems. Museum officials emphasize that this scientific legacy established during the late 19th and early 20th centuries continues to inform and inspire contemporary marine research today.
